Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A fossil chilopodous myriopod, sole representative of the order Protosyngnatha of Scudder's classification, found in the Carboniferous shales of Mazon creek, Illinois. The body consisted of ten annular segments and, unlike modern myriopods, each segment was armed with bundles of fine needle-like spines, which caused it to be originally described as a fossil caterpillar.
