Definitions
from The Century Dictionary.
- noun A genus of fossil algæ, occurring in Silurian and Devonian rocks, the trunks of which attained the dimensions of tree-trunks. It may have been a gigantic seaweed or kelp, but Dawson regarded it as a land plant and a true tree. It was subsequently renamed Nematophycus by Carruthers and Nematophyton by Dawson, but the original name must be adhered to although implying a relationship to the Pinales. See
Nematophycus .
