Side note to Asativum - I believe the expression is actually "hard row to hoe"...as in farming or gardening.
"Rode hard and put away wet" is commonly used these days to describe in a derogatory fashion a woman that looks rough or a woman who has been used in an ill fashion and discarded. Here in my city the term is synonymous with an equally derogatory term, gin hag, and both terms imply alcoholism.
