  • This is a song. It was played in the army/navy for years by fifers/pipers, etc. to indicate "time for dinner." It was carried over into the American armed forces for many decades as a slightly different tune called "Roast Beef."

  • I assumed that because of where the ad popped up, but it still sounds goofy to me. :-)

  • Moreover, it was played only for dinner, because that was the only time they got meat. Other tunes (like Peas on a Trencher, e.g.) were played for breakfast and supper.
