- noun A series of short transverse grooves in the pavement of a road that produce a rumbling noise when driven on, serving as a warning to the driver that the vehicle is drifting off the road or out of a lane.

In Australia at least this is a kind of road marking. As you drive over it (think 4 wheels or more, my cycling friends) a rumbling sound is made. This is supposed to alert the driver to a hazard he/she is approaching, eg. a level crossing.
