  • Wordies,

I'm afraid that it's my fault if Basil started sending messages here on Wordie.

I think his website is a nice idea, so I started using it and linking to Wordie there and vice versa.

    I couldn't expect this. Sorry!

  • Ouch, it's a fellow Brit:

Westminster (London SW1)? No wonder: scummy lot down there...

Edit: I kindly obfuscated the e-mail address, because after all I wouldn't want to be responsible for Basil's being spammed.

  • I asked him to delete his comments.

Let's see if he'll be nice.

    November 5, 2008

  • Any connection do you think with Word Wizard?

Edit: Sound Lantern is Basil Miles; Word Wizard was founded by Rufus Miles.

    November 5, 2008

  • I also sent him a message on his website. Let's wait and see.

    November 5, 2008

  • His profile now says 'sorry guys didn't realise this was spam', so it seems to have worked.

    November 5, 2008

  • I think John deleted his account. Well, he knows how to apologize anyway. Otherwise, he'll have one less SL user tomorrow.

    November 5, 2008

  • Personal message in my inbox, on his website:

Hi, please apologize to the community for me, i did no realize it was spamming, i don't know how to delete comments. BR

    November 5, 2008

  • (By the way: apologize and realize don't sound British to me!)

    November 5, 2008

  • They're well established British usage, actually; we just have the -ise alternative in common usage too. Now if he'd said analyze, that would suggest a non-Brit.

    November 5, 2008

  • Thank you! I didn't know it!

    November 5, 2008

  • Basil just sent me a very polite email. My fuse is kinda short today. Appreciated his laying off, and apologizing.

I don't really need to learn anything about this person--you're an idiot if you think putting the same pasted message on a hundred profiles is anything other than abuse.

    November 5, 2008

  • Exactly my thoughts. Thanks for fixing it, John.

    November 5, 2008

  • Prolagus, don't feel bad about using the other site and linking it back to Wordie. That's a fine use of both sites.

    November 5, 2008

  • What the bear says, Pro. Not your doing at all.

    November 5, 2008

  • Yep, what John said. Apology is fine, accepted. But honestly, a person turns up at a community as a new member and his first act is to invite a hundred people he doesn't know to his own site ... how can that not be outrageously abusive? If Basilly is web-savvy enough to have his own site, he knows it's spam.

    November 5, 2008

  • "Dear users we are terminating our operations and hence this site will go offline on 31.3.2009"

    March 27, 2009

  • Uhh... You do mean Sound Lantern, and not Wordie, right?

    *worries*

    March 27, 2009

  • Hey, we could have a Wordie Graveyard (list) for dead sites and nuked spammers :-)
