  • noun A large genus of fungi, typo of the family Sphæropsidaceæ, having separate black pycnidia and dark-colored unicellular spores. Over 180 species have been described. They are especially numerous in North America. S. Malorum is the cause of the black rot of the apple. S. tabacina is found on decaying wood.
