  • In Greek antiquity, a public festival in Athens which commemorated the uniting by Theseus of all the towns of Attica under the leadership of Athens. Also synoikia.
  • noun A community; a body of people living together, as in a city or a city block: sometimes equivalent to the Latin insula, a city block.
