Whilst the rest of Britain has canals, Yorkshire has navigations, that unique combination of canals and rivers which provide for commercial and pleasure traffic even to this day. Public houses were needed to serve the hard-worked crews of barges and keels that plied between collieries and ironworks and out to the Humber at Goole and Hull, and fortunately many of these canal and riverside inns remain with significant reminders in their names. The Navigation at Calder Grove and a similarly named one at Mirfield, the Ferry Boat at Mexborough, the Colliers at Elland and the Wharf at Sowerby Bridge are all good examples; and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, although not completed until 1816, had its birth pangs in 1766 at the Sun Inn in Bradford, where a public meeting to launch the scheme was held.
