  • I read about this here. (Actually, here first.)

My favorite part: "The possibility of Pacific Northwest tree octopus extinction is not an unwarranted fear. Other tree octopus species -- including the Douglas octopus and the red-ringed madrona sucker -- were once abundant throughout the Cascadia region, but have since gone extinct because of threats similar to those faced by paxarbolis, as well as overharvesting by the now-illegal tree octopus trade."

  • Oh, that's classic. And kind of sad.

  • It's just ... I don't know, this stuff makes my life go out of shape. Octopus should just not be in trees. It's like, uhh, scaly amphibious koalas or something.

Is it possible the red-ringed madrona sucker became extinct through embarrassment?

    July 30, 2008

  • Ahaha, I concur. Octopus should just not be in trees pretty much sums it up. Tree-crawling octopi (octopuses? octopodes?) are just creepy.

  • And the picture on c_b's link is just whacko. The poor spifflicated cephalopod looks like it was just flung up a tree by some shortsighted surrogate cupcake thrower.

  • Mia, octopodes is correct - at least etymologically...

I want to adopt a tree octopus.

    July 30, 2008

  • Gee. Attack butterfly didn't get nearly this kind of traffic. Neither did viscous sheep.

    July 30, 2008

  • I'm embarassed to admit that I read, in horror, for quite a while before I, um, got it...*facepalm*

    July 30, 2008

  • I think that's probably true of most people, dontcry. :) At least you didn't have to hork over it! Aren't they cute?

    July 30, 2008

  • Cute? Well, maybe to another tree octopus...

    August 1, 2008

  • Adorable. I think the charging baby tapir and the tree octopus should get together and throw a party.

    August 1, 2008

  • As long as they don't mate.

    August 1, 2008

  • I didn't say a mating party, reesetee. *sheesh* I'm talking, you know, cheesy puffs, chips and salsa. Maybe some nice margaritas.

    August 1, 2008

  • Mating party? There is such a thing??

    August 2, 2008

  • Well... I mean... Uhh... *runs out of the room*

    August 2, 2008

  • Owned.

    August 2, 2008

  • Yeah, totally been to a mating party...long time ago.

    August 2, 2008

  • What next? Arboreal abalones?
