From Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben's Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States, approved by Congress in March 1779, and used in its original form until 1824.

In this manual (and others), when the term drummers is used, it is understood to include fifers as well. "Drummers" was used interchangeably with "musicians." Who were paid a dollar more a month than private soldiers. :)

"The drummers will practice a hundred paces in front of the battalion, at the hours fixed by the adjutant general; and any drummer found beating at any other time, (except ordered) shall be punished." (p. 91)
