Source unknown. Since the original sound value of Ⰼ (d') approximated /d͡ʑ/, it was used to render the Byzantine Greek pronunciation of palatalized g' in such borrowings as ⰌⰅⰐⰑⰀ ("hell") (from Greek γεέννα) as well as the reflexes of Proto-Slavic d' in the Western South Slavic medieval texts.
