A 9th-level fighter in 1e wasn’t so much more mechanically powerful than a 3rd-level fighter — the real power difference was in their greater fame, hirelings, allies, favours, access to powerful people in the setting, and other intangibles that came from all the non-combat stuff that was typical in a 1e game.

Wouldn’t have to be too deterministic – “When bloodied,” “When it looks bad for them (bosses down, group 50% down)” … Worked fine in 1e-2e.

I think that you’re right, the real fix is to make magic items harder to make – not impossible like in 1e/2e, but more than a couple days of labor certainly.

With high school, I graduated to AD&D; moving to the more complex rules and grittier world of all those lovely 1e adventures just seemed natural.

I loved M&M 1e, but when they went to 2e it just got a little too much more crunchy and complicated for me.

Earlier editions of D&D supported all kinds of games without trouble: long epics; one-shot dungeon crawls; political backroom dealings; high fantasy, gritty fantasy; low, no, and high magic settings; heroic, everyman, anti-hero, and legendary characters; high-seas swashbuckling; tactical skirmishing; castle sieges. 1e through 3e could do all of those without house ruling, and without ignoring the majority of the system.
