Indeed, as the conversion from 3e is easy, I was able to re-use all my huge list of 3e and d20 modern supplements without much fatigue.

You can argue, however, that though it sharply reduces the number of options for casters, it opens up many more options for the martial classes, whose “power selection” in 3e was nothing outside of feats.

(Even casters in 3e tended to have to specialize in spells that worked off of Reflex save vs Will save vs touch attack …) So a build where you have an Achilles heel in any one defense is really dangerous; anyone can take advantage of it, not just specific classes or whatever.

It was bad enough in 3e where it was half – yes, no one can find a buyer for a +2 sword that will pay more than 50%, even though adventurers routinely buy for 100%.

Most of the “template” and “half-whatever” stuff in 3e was kinda lame.

And, to keep with the discussion, I think that these two factors alone encourage a more simulationist view of your character than the tweaking every single iota of ability that drove me bonkers in 3e and even more so in 4e.

(Although even though I houseruled the crap out of 2e – adding Perception as a seventh stat, for example – I never felt the need to in 3e, except for a simplified skill mechanic eventually.)
