Aratinga

Species of particular concern include the endangered Bonaire Lora (Amazonia barbadensis) and Aruban burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia arubensis), the Aruban parakeet (Aratinga pertinax arubensis), Bonaire Green parrot, and flamingos.

The cloud forest supports a wide diversity of fauna with such notable species as turkey vulture Cathartes aura, Andean guan Penelope montagnii, scarlet-fronted parakeet Aratinga wagleri, lyre-tailed nightjar Uropsalis lyra, marvellous spatuletail Loddigesia mirabilis (VU), cock-of-the-rock Rupicola peruviana, carbonated flower-piercer Diglossa carbonaria and hepatic tanager Piranga flava (Mittermeier, de Macedo and Luscombe, 1975).

A Margaritan subspecies of parrot, the Margarita s blue-crowned Parakeed, (Aratinga acuticaudata neoxena), occurs in the arid zones around the mangroves of La Restinga lagoon, and is also severely threatened by pet trade.

Forests in the region are important as refuge for many resident and migratory bird species, such as Cuban amazon Amazona leucocephala (NT) and Cuban parakeet Aratinga euops (VU).
