De Sica is naked to the world in this performance, and never more so than when he shows Bardone's hopeless addiction to gambling and roulette -- a vice Bardone shared with Louis Jouvet's fallen baron in Jean Renoir's 1936 classic "The Lower Depths," and which De Sica shared too, in a compulsion that came close to ruining his life.
