On the fantasy side, you can't go wrong with Peter S Beagle's The Last Unicorn, or for something edgier, Patrick Rothfuss 'The Name of the Wind, or if the person would be more interested in a modern setting, Trader or Forests of the Heart by Charles de Lint (although if you read too much de Lint, every story starts sounding the same after a while).
