Brahmo Samaj

He was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, the leader of Brahmo Samaj, the influential social movement of the Brahmo religion.

Then followed a short service of worship which included a Mantra sung by a member of the Brahmo Samaj community, some words read by Rev Lindy Latham on the association of the Bristol Unitarian minister, Rev Lant Carpenter and his daughter Mary with the Rajah, followed by a prayer written by Cliff Reed on True Religion.

He converted a Baptist missionary, William Adam, to Unitarianism – known thereafter to Baptists as the “fall of the second Adam” (Salmond, 2004: 46) – and disliked the doctrine of the Trinity almost as much as he disliked Hindu polytheism (Brahmo Samaj, undated).

Although Roy himself seemed, in one of his last speeches, somewhat bemused by, or perhaps modestly self-effacing about, the attention he received from Unitarians Roy, 1832, the connections between Unitarianism and the Brahmo Samaj have continued to be maintained over the years, both in Bristol and beyond.

The Brahmo Samaj are also involved in the IARF, as well as the Rissho Kosei-kai (a Japanese Buddhist group), the Guru Nanak Foundation, the Ramakrishna Institute, humanists and 'traditional primal religions' (Chryssides, 1998: 76).
