Brixworth

One of the best surviving Saxon churches, All Saints Brixworth in Northamptonshire, was also built partly out of reused Roman bricks, a remnant of the great building campaign begun by Bishop Saxulf of Mercia in 675.

If it had, I suspect that it lost them as Brixworth did, and was without when the east part of the church was put into the form shown on the plan.

Deerhurst gives more points than are found together in any other single monument, but the parallels of all, except the division of the two lower stories of the tower, may be found elsewhere, and nearly all at Wearmouth and Brixworth.

Brixworth and Monkwearmouth were probably not heightened until the western tower had come into existence elsewhere.

In the north and south doorways of this porch it has kinship with Monkwearmouth, and at Brixworth there are definite signs that these doorways led into passages which may have been connected with other buildings of the monastery, or possibly even with an _atrium_ or fore-court.

But no such difficulties of date or plan exist with regard to the large Saxon church at Brixworth, between Northampton and Market Harborough.

The tower at Broughton is obviously later than that at Barton: the doorway, whose details are of a post-Conquest character, is in the south wall; and a large circular stair-turret, like that at Brixworth, projects from the west wall.
