I note that Clarke & Dalglish have also adopted Smith's tactic of using fullbacks (for Johnson and Aurelio, read Whittaker and Broadfoot) as wing backs who can get forward to support a lone front man from a 5 man midfield (usually to little effect in the case of Broadfoot) or drop back into a packed 5 man defence whenever the opposition gets the ball (usually to little effect in the case of Whittaker).
