Cercomela

Although 179 highland bird species have been recorded for the mountain, species recorded in the upper zones are few in number, although they include occasional lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus, mainly on the Shira ridge, hill chat Cercomela sordida, Hunter's cisticola Cisticola hunteri, and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird Nectarinia johnstoni.

Five birds are endemic or near-endemic to this ecoregion: including the Karoo chat (Cercomela schlegelii), tractrac chat (Cercomela tractrac), greybacked cisticola (Cisticola subruficapillus), and the herero chat (Namibornis herero).

The songster of the house-top -- the brown rock-chat (_Cercomela fusca_) -- makes sweet music throughout the month for the benefit of his spouse, who is incubating four pretty pale-blue eggs in a nest built on a ledge in an outhouse or on the sill of a clerestory window.

Among birds, the ferruginous lark (Certhilauda burra, VU) and Sclater's lark (Spizocorys sclateri, LR) are strictly endemic to thisecoregion, while another five species are near-endemic: Karoo chat (Cercomela schlegelii), tractrac chat (Cercomela tractrac), red lark (Certhilauda burra), Karoo scrub robin (Cercotrichas coryphaeus), red-headed cisticola (Cisticola subruficapillus), and the Namaqua prinia (Phragmacia substriata).

The Abyssinian longclaw is considered near-endemic to this ecoregion, as are the moorland chat (Cercomela sordida), Abyssinian waxbill (Estrilda ochrogaster), moorland francolin (Francolinus psilolaemus), Rueppell's chat (Myrmecocichla melaena), ankober serin (Serinus ankoberensis), and spot-breasted lapwing (Vanellus melanocephalus).
