Churilla and Shepherd do a good job building tension throughout the book - the battle between the Engineer and the bat-thing is staged well, and then the debate at the church is quick but gives us good contrasting viewpoints the priest's and the townsfolk's.

Churilla draws the best monsters this side of Mike Mignola and Dan Brereton, and Clem's Christianity filtered through Hester's sensibilities makes this a more fascinating read than it might otherwise be.
