It is also essential winter habitat for up to 500,000 overwintering ducks and waterbirds such as teal Anas crecca (160,000), wigeon Anas Penelope (100,000), greylag goose Anser anser (100,000), most of Spain's herons, white stork Ciconia ciconia, stone-curlew Burhinus oedicnemus and slender-billed gull Larus genei.

The avifauna includes black stork Ciconia nigra, white stork Ciconia ciconia, golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos, greater spotted eagle A. clanga (VU), white-tailed eagle Haliaetus albicilla, great snipe Gallinaga media, corncrake Crex crex, eagle owl Bubo bubo. great grey owl Strix nebulosa and Eurasian curlew Numenius arquata.

Some 35 raptors are found in the Batoka gorge below the falls: Taita falcon Falco fasciinucha breeds there as do black eagle Aquilla verreauxi, peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus, augur buzzard Buteo rufofuscatus augur also black stork Ciconia nigra and African swift Apus barbatus.

The blacknecked crane Grus nigricollis (VU) is seen on migration. 86 animals are under state protection which in addition to the above include Chinese stump-tailed macaque Macaca thibetana, takin Budorcus taxicolor, bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus, Chinese hazel-grouse Tetrastes sewerzowi, pheasant grouse Tetraophasis obscurus, black stork Ciconia nigra, Pallas's sea-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus and golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos.

The woodlands constitute important wintering enclaves for thousands of cranes (Grus grus), and also breeding areas for hundreds of white storks (Ciconia ciconia) and the endangered black stork (Ciconia nigra).
