The late 90s were something of a renaissance for science-fiction cinema, with titles like Cube, The Matrix and City of Lost Children wowing genre fans.
French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet won early professional fame for his films Delicatessen and City of Lost Children (which I've honestly never really enjoyed) and then went on to take a critical shanking for his unsucessful venture into Hollywood, Alien Resurrection (which I actually quite like).
The City of Lost Children and Amelie, mixing the both to create a wonderfully playful story about a very serious topic.
It is a brilliant first effort from the Caro / Jeunet duo that followed this one up with the City of Lost Children.
