I'd never really assumed there was any big reason behind Cypher's death other than it being part of Simonson's gradual whittling down of the cast Magma and Karma had already been written out, Sunspot and Warlock were farmed out to the Fallen Angels miniseries for the better part of a year, and Magik wasn't far behind Doug on the chopping block.
