The New Orleans version is similar to the Hawaiian but was the creation of pastry chef Beulah Ledner, whose early 1900s cake began, according to New Orleans Classic Desserts, by Kit Wohl, as a white cake with chocolate custard filling and chocolate frosting, just like a famous predecessor, the Hungarian Dobos Torte.
