The region hosts an amazing number of avifauna; there are 681 reported bird species including red-shouldered macaws (Ara nobilis), sun parakeets (Aratinga solstitialis), and green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus).
Some bird species like the Brotogeris pyrrhopterus, Pionus chalcopterus and Carduelis semiradskii are endangered and others have limited distribution including Forpus coelestis, Aratinga erythrogenis, and Cyanocorax mystacalis.
Some unique species found in this ecoregion are the Mexican parrotlet (Forpus cyanopygius), rufous-bellied chachalaca (Ortalis wagleri) and San Blas jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus).
Many birds that are found only here or in few other places include ash-throated crakes (Porzana albicollis), plain-breasted ground-doves (Columbina minuta), red-shouldered macaws (Ara nobilis), sun parakeets (Aratinga solstitialis), green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus), scaled ground-cookoos (Neomorphus squamiger), and stygian owls (Asio stygius).
