Sympathetic though I am personally to the argument, my experience (admittedly 30 years ago) with the French suggests to me that, as far as most Frenchpeople are concerned, they wouldn't agree.
The anniversary one isn't a mistake : obviously it involves some pre-2002 Frenchpeople who are having a really, really cheap anniversary.
I think it is to Germans as Limey is to Brits and Frogs to Frenchpeople.
It wasn’t so that Americans can identify Frenchpeople, but so the Jihadis can.
