- proper n. A Central Salishan language spoken on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Halkomelem is closely related to Squamish (Sḵwxwú7mesh snichim).
Sorry, no etymologies found.
Some linguistic sources attribute it to an alteration of cohose from a Pacific Northwest Native American language, Halkomelem, which is part of a group of languages known as Salish from southwestern British Columbia.
Chinook being a trade language is easier for anyone to learn--we were communicating in it after a weekend--so it's an option for people who want to keep a hold on their culture but are daunted by Halkomelem.
