Previous work revealed the youngest (325 million-year-old) remnant of the North Tian Shan Ocean between the Yili and Junggar blocks, North Xinjiang, western China, and in this study Han et al. report a zircon U-Pb age of 316 million years old for the Sikeshu granitic intrusion which crosscuts the collisional zone between the Yili and Junggar blocks and thus places a crucial upper age bound for the time of disappearance of the North Tian Shan Ocean and collision between the Yili and Junggar blocks.
