Outfitted with a giant horseshoe lunch counter and an eight-piece orchestra when launched for the Seattle-Bremerton run in 1935, the Kalakala was converted to shrimp processing in 1967, then jammed into an earthen berth on Alaska's Kodiak Island.

Now afloat for the first time in 25 years, the ferry will soon return to Puget Sound, where Bevis hopes to raise the cash to restore it as a convention center and museum -- and a giant memory chest for thousands of Seattleites who wed, worked and commuted aboard the Kalakala in its heyday.
