A second AML genome also sequenced by the St. Louis team that later appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, belonging to a male in remission after receiving chemotherapy, provided a breakthrough.25 This genome took just 16.5 runs on Illumina machines to obtain near-complete 98 percent coverage of the cancer genome.26 “At current rates, we really can sequence a genome a week,” said team member Dan Koboldt.27 The most striking result was a recurring mutation in a gene called IDHI, observed in 16 out of 187 AML samples, which offers a range of potential diagnostic and therapeutic options.
