Approximately 1,000 Chocos and 200 Kunas Indians live along the edges of the rivers.
The area is both anthropologically and historically rich, with two major indigenous groups: Chocos (1,000 Emberas and Vainanas) and Kunas (200), and a number of smaller groups still living by traditional practices.
But by mid-January 2011, no one - not the Kunas nor any of Don's friends - had seen or heard from him in weeks.
The Kunas have enjoyed self rule since 1925, and each island has their own king or mayor.
Every day we enjoyed nautical feasts of fresh lobster, octopus, and crab, bought from the Kunas and cooked up by fellow crew member, and chef, Jonny.
We also met some local Kunas, the indigenous inhabitants of the islands, who were very welcoming.
