September 24-October 5, 1987—We visited Poland during a fascinating time in their history, when Lech Walesa was becoming a national hero and Solidarity was becoming known worldwide.
Later that week we greeted Lech Walesa at the White House, accompanied by Lane Kirkland, president of the AFL-CIO, and Mrs. Kirkland.
We had several foreign visitors that spring: President Lech Walesa and his wife, Danuta, from Poland; President Violeta Chamorro from Nicaragua; and President Turgut Ozal of Turkey and his wife, Semra.
