On Dec. 20, Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu will mount its first fully staged production since 1977.

In Barcelona, at the Gran Teatre de Liceu, "Le Grand Macabre," György Ligeti's sole opera, makes its debut in Spain some 30 years after its Stockholm premiere, and Barcelona's storied opera house plays host to this eerie "anti-anti opera," as Ligeti called it Nov. 19-Dec. 1.

The Liceu said Tuesday that cuts in subsidies by the Spanish Culture Ministry and the regional government of Catalonia have reduced its 2011-2012 budget to euro48.4 million ($66 million), down euro10 million ($14 million) from two years ago.
