She wasn't too sure of the word for "mattress" (Matratze) and it came out Matrose.

Ms. Gilman's story about her friend's mixing up Matratze with Matrose would have been a bit juicier if the correct German preposition had been used: one does not sleep "next to" the mattress (neben der Matratze) but auf der Matratze, "on (top of)" it.
