I love the Melendy family books, but this just did not hit me as positively.

But then, it seems like I've heard a lot more criticism of Penderwicks than you have -- I know many who enjoyed it in a mild sort of way, but few people in that circle seem to mention it without including something like "but I'd rather just reread [personal favorite similar to Penderwicks] again" or "basically Melendy fanfic".
