When I read the book (a lot of years), I was very impressed with the Moties in Larry Niven's novel: "The Mote on the God's Eye" and I consider all the aliens in Peter F. Hamilton's novels are really splendid.

How would Niven's or Asimov's detective stories be listed now?

There's still some damned good ones out there - Niven's puppeteers spring to mind, as do the manta in Piers Anthony's Of Man and Manta - but generally that which is alien falls foul of story, which can be hampered when, to retain the essentially alien, the writer must not allow the reader to understand it.

Asimov's The Caves of Steel (not its sequels, so much) or Niven's stories of Gil "the ARM" Hamilton are two examples I've reread a lot.
