Northwest Territories

Definitions

from The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition.

  • A territory of northern Canada between Yukon Territory and Nunavut and including part of the western Arctic Archipelago. Originally a much vaster territory encompassing most of central and northern Canada, Northwest Territories was formed in 1870 from the Hudson's Bay Company's holdings, which had been sold to Canada shortly after Confederation (1867). The province of Manitoba was carved out of the territory a month later, followed by Yukon Territory (1898), Alberta and Saskatchewan (1905), and Nunavut (1999). Yellowknife is the capital.
