The blacknecked crane Grus nigricollis (VU) is seen on migration. 86 animals are under state protection which in addition to the above include Chinese stump-tailed macaque Macaca thibetana, takin Budorcus taxicolor, bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus, Chinese hazel-grouse Tetrastes sewerzowi, pheasant grouse Tetraophasis obscurus, black stork Ciconia nigra, Pallas's sea-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus and golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos.

Among the many which may be readily seen by the visitor are no less than nine species of kingfisher, including brown-winged and stork-billed kingfishers, Pelargopsis amauropterus (NT) and P. capensis, respectively; the magnificent white-bellied sea-eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster which, at a density of one individual per 53.1 kilometers (km) of waterways, is quite common; also the much rarer grey-headed fish eagle Ichthyophaga ichthyaetus (NT), Pallas's fish-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus and several other raptors.

Interesting marsh birds found in the reclaimed areas include egrets Egretta alba, E. garzetta and E. intermedia, purple heron Ardea purpurea (a rare vagrant from Africa) and green-backed heron Butorides striatus, while birds of prey include osprey Pandion haliaetus, Pallas's sea-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus (R), white-bellied sea-eagle H. leucogaster, grey-headed fishing eagle Ichthyophaga ichthyaetus, peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus, Oriential hobby F. severus, northern eagle owl Bubo bubo and brown fish owl Ketupa zeylonensis.

However, the ecoregion harbors two globally threatened species, the Bengal florican and the lesser florican (Eupodotis indica), as well as the threatened Pallas's fish-eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) and swamp francolin (Francolinus gularis).
