Scrubby and forested mountain valleys on the slopes to the south of the Qaidam Basin contain some of the richest wildlife habitat and wildlife populations, including musk deer (Moschus spp.) and Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsoni).

These include Tibetan antelope or chiru (Pantholops hodgsoni), the only genus of large mammal endemic to the Tibetan Plateau, well adapted to moving quickly across expanses of flat to rolling steppe.

The super-orbital foramina just under the horns, which are marked in most antelope and deer, are very minute in _Pantholops_.

The last is a doubtful point; as far as I have been able to gather evidence on the subject the female appears to be hornless, which allies _Pantholops_ more to the antelopes and the gazelles.

Only the Tibetan antelope, Pantholops hodgsonii, is threatened with extinction out the six non-antelope species monitored by the Antelope Specialist Group.

Other species include Tibetan wild ass (Equus kiang), Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsoni), Tibetan argali (Ovis ammon), Blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur), Tibetan gazelle (Procapra picticaudata).
