But I kept thinking of how Oshii incorporates the right amount of pathos and comedy (yes, comedy - Oshii can be a funny guy when he wants to) into this futuristic techno-thriller and I kept coming back to this second film in the Patlabor franchise.

But it's a sweet film, and it's one of Oshii's most accessible movies; I find most of his films (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor) to be simply too cold, heavy and emotionally disengaged to keep my attention, despite their nice animation and hard sci-fi crunchiness.
