Nicholas Carr offers a superb discussion of Dirk Riehl's (IEEE) "The Economic Motivation of Open Source Software: Stakeholder Perspectives" - both seem to echo a somewhat pessimistic view of the Open Source software ecosystem, namely that it culminates in the "Programmer's Dilemma" (Nicholas, emphasis added):
