The printmaker Tourny, who collected etchings by Rembrandt and brought a small printing press with him to Italy, inspired Degas to try making prints in the Rembrandtian manner, as three etchings on the exhibition's first wall make clear.
The effect is eminently Rembrandtian, as the figure emerges from almost total darkness.
The print room is likewise good rather than splendid, unless one excepts M.A. J. Bauer's fine Rembrandtian etchings.
