Mr. Roath also notes that because Ms. Williams doesn't have a 403b, she is eligible for a tax-deductible IRA and could set it up by April 15 to deduct the contribution from last year's taxes.

Given their income and steady types of employment, Mr. Roath says a minimum of $4,000 to $5,000 in a savings or other readily liquid account should suffice for an emergency fund.
