Born in 1963 in the crowded industrial seaport city of Tianjin on the bustling Bohai Gulf in northeastern China, he was given the name Hu Shitai by his dissident parents, who endured years in Mao Tse-tung’s brutal labor camps during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1966 to 1976.
