  • n. The French equivalent of solfatara, somewhat current, in English since the volcanic outbreaks in Martinique and St. Vincent in 1902. The word is a common geographical name in the Windward Islands where the French influence either is or has been predominant. It is applied to any expiring volcanic vent. When there is but one on an island it is called La Soufrière.
