At first no uniform movements, but varying in different lands, it was given a definite character by St. Bernardine of Siena (q.v.) and St. John Capistran.
Like St. Bernardine of Siena he greatly propagated devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and, together with that saint, was accused of heresy because of this devotion.
