- noun the capital of Tajikistan; formerly Stalinabad 1926-1991
Sorry, no etymologies found.
Dushanbe, briefly known as Stalinabad a few decades earlier-that must have made the local people happy!
Stalinabad, the capital of Tadzhik Republic, did regain its original Tadzhik name of Dushanbe, but here the change was back to the old name of a caravan stop and had nothing to do with tsarist Russia.
Examples of this kind of national restoration of local names are the renaming of Stalinabad already mentioned and the renaming of the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
