I was also unable to nominate two of my other favorites - Daniel Abraham's "The Curandero and the Swede: a Tale from the American 1001 Nights" from F&SF, a very strange and somewhat discomfiting story of subaltern American histories, and Ann Leckie's "The Nalendar" from Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, a fun, brightly colored adventure story in which a young girl and a divine lizard take on a powerful river-goddess.
